School assessment systems enable student to answer questions set by the teacher, either anonymously or not. Ususally each student has a handheld transmitter (some with a display) with a combination of letters and numbers on the buttons, and the classroom has a receiver unit, connected to the teacher's PC.

The teacher uses the software (either in the SMART Notebook or in PowerPoint) to set questions that the students will answer.

Once the students have answered, the system will collect the results which can then be shown on screen, or they can be saved or exported for later use.

The school assessment systems can be used throughout the lesson to assess the students' understanding of the current topic, so if necessary further exploration of the subject can be undertaken.
